Hello Everyone,
Please join my blog and share experiences you have had with caring instuctors. Why did you think they were caring? Perhaps you are a caring instructor - how do you enact caring in the classroom? Look forward to hearing from instructors and students.

This is a great idea, Helena! My first thought about caring instructors is a memory of a clinical instructor who talked to me about my cold and how I was taking care of myself and whether or not I was making smart choices. I've tried to incorporate that connection with students into my teaching persona. There is always the issue of where to draw the line...you are the teacher, not a friend or a health care provider or a mother. There is a certain degree of finesse that must be used in caring connections with students. What do other's think? Susanne Mohnkern

I remember the little things that were done that would make you feel cared about. I have tried to enact the little things in my class and it seems they work. Just presence and listening, and when you say you will get back to them, do it! Acknowledgement of the fact that LIFE can interfere with progress in the learning journey especially for the adult with alot of life.

I remember a teacher I had back in Secondary school - Mr. Devito. We were doing a "practice" standardized test, and my perfomance was less than stellar. I remember him coming to my desk afterwords saying he was disappointed, and thought I was capable of doing much better work. He was right. I was unprepared, and didn't take the test seriously. When the "real" test came around,I was more than prepared, and did very well. I remember thinking, "This guy really cares about how I do in this class. I better show him what I'm capable of!". It became my mission in that class to impress him. As a result, I came to impress myself!
